THE FIRST UNIT

Percussionist- Dion "Bad Boy" Thames has silently emerged to be one of the area's most favored musicians.  Not only does he bring talent to the First Unit, his vibrant personality is a plus!  His musical career started at age 16 when he began freelancing with a variety of local R&B and DC Go-Go bands.  Unlike most percussionists, Bad Boy learned to play on the opposite side of congas, basically facing his trainers with his back towards his audience!  When he began to play independently, setting up his congas from left to right became a trademark habit for him. Bad Boy's dynamic style enhances the sounds of The First Unit.  He's truly a party-pleaser and guarantees the deliverance of the "Bringing You Back!" part of our motto.

According to Bad Boy - "As long as the musicians play the way they're supposed to and the vocalists sing, it's ON!  Every show has its goal and so far we've been scoring!
We're constantly reaching for the next level!"

DrummerDonel "Pops" Brown believes that he was born to be a drummer.  He recalls beating on objects with perfect rhythm as early as age 4. Though he didn't own a drum set of his own until age 17, he took on the risk of sitting in with other drummers in nightclubs as early as his junior high school years. Today, the native Charles County, Marylander has had the opportunity to play for a number of well known local and professional artists.  Pops' versatile genre style is a primary component of the group's originality.

Referring to those days as his Five Minutes of Fame, Pops states:
"I gave those guys everything I learned whenever they gave me the opportunity!  Hey, five minutes is a long time!  And whenever I impressed them, they gave me a few of those 'five minutes' 3 to 4 times a night!"

BASSIST - Paul "Lt. Crankin" Rankin is no stranger to live entertainment. This veteran has over 25 years experience within the live music performing industry.  It is his knowledge and creativity that enlightens Signature Live!'s audiences.  Having no preference in music genre, expands his creativity.  Everyone that knows him, knows that the Lieutenant just loves to play.  He is definitely a teamplayer that favors 'groovin' & jammin'. His overall love for music keeps him busy creating ideas, captivating his teamplayers and fans.  Blessed to play for a number of artists (local & professional), he steers his opportunities in positive avenues, benefiting anyone that plays with him. The stage name "Lt. Crankin'  truly fits this Washingtonian.  Without  the Lieutenant there would be a missing ingredient for Signature Live!

GUITARIST- Ronnie Hinton is definitely an under rated musician!  This dude has traveled and played with some real heavy hitters such as the late Wilson Pickett and Rufus Thomas to today's legend B.B. KING. Originally born in Oakland, CA, his parents moved to the Maryland/DC area when he was a toddler.  His late father, a percussionist/music theory instructor encouraged his three sons to consider learning how to play an instrument. Eight year old Ronnie chose guitar.  Immediately, his father enrolled him into a classical guitar class (flatpick). It was the beginning of an impressional music career from country, rock, blues, gospel, Pop, Disco and R&B.  Although Ronnie continues to perform and travel with a number of musicians, he's reserved a spot with Signature Live! For Signature Live, Ronnie has become an asset who's gained a rapid rapport with each member.

When asked what he likes most about Signature Live!, Ronnie tells everyone -----"I love the motivation, energy and love this group has. It's welcomed and visible from the time we hit the stage and exit the stage!  Hey, the same energy is even during our rehearsals!"

 Lyricist- David "Bad Boy" Sheffy
From the phrases "still wet behind the ears", "new driver", "son", "lil brotha", "under our wing" and "youngin", David "Baby Boy" Sheffy, can be refered to as all of the above. It's no secret that he's the youngest male in the group. His strong desire to rap came in the late 1980's after attending a Dougie Fresh and RUN DMC concert. Their strong performances inspired him to learn the unique twisted-tongue art. After months of practicing, Baby Boy joined a number of private rap battling sessions. By the mid- 1990's he shared the stage with local rappers and DC Go-Go bands. The Washingtonian's greatest challenge came in the late 1990's when he helped develop Signature Live! (formerly known as About Time). It was the first time ever that he got a chance to rap along with female team players.

"I love Signature Live! We are a family of love! We show that emotion each time we perform." ---------------BabyBoy
